Book Review: Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe

Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe
by Carlos Hernandez

Blurb: Sal and Gabi have to try to make everything right with our world when there is a rogue Gabi from another universe running loose.

Sal Vidon creates wormholes. But Sal's father, a calamity physicist, is trying to shut down all the wormholes Sal creates, because Papi thinks they are eroding the very fabric of our world. All of Papi's efforts are in vain, however, because a Gabi from another universe has gone rogue and is popping up all over the place, seeking revenge for the fact that her world has been destroyed. While Sal and Gabi work together to keep both Papi and Rogue Gabi under control, they also have to solve the mystery of Yasmany, who has gone missing from school. Could it have something to do with the wormhole in the back of his locker?

Cover: They had to change the covers between books. I personally prefer the original look, but I like that this one is still colorful and gives a hint at the story.

Plot: The first book was more about Sal and Gabi meeting and saving her brother. This one is about their developing relationship as they try to save the universe from blowing up. It kept me turning pages the whole time. I liked how we got to see more of the multiverse and found new uses for wormholes. Although I do wish we had gotten more magic, like in the first book. It made me laugh, it made me tear up. All the emotions.

Characters: Sal is still one of my all time favorite characters. I love the way he narrates the story. During this book he continues to learn about himself and grow and mature. He's so sweet and hilarious. Gabi is still Gabi, and now there are more of her. Maybe a bit too much Gabi, but she's great.

Then we have all our other great characters. Yasmany *broken heart emoji*, American Step Mom, Principle Torres. I love how they're all very distinct and enjoyable. Sweeps, the entropy sweeper, gets more page time, along with a remeberation machine and a talking toilet (it makes sense in context, I swear).

World: I kind of love that this story takes place in a sort of future world, where AI, robots, and talking toilets are a thing. And the fact that it's set in Miami, because I don't think a lot of things are set there. I can really picture the setting.

Other: My one complaint about this book would be that it's a bit "woke". The characters are all about emotions, loving who you want, and non-violence. While those things are good in their place, it came on a lot stronger than in the first book. Also, there was an AI romance that made me uncomfortable. Other than that, it's amazing.

Rating: 5 stars
