A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2 Review

A Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2 Review

Lucky you, you get an extra post this week. A review, a word which here means Rachel will yell to the internet about how good season two of A Series of Unfortunate Events is. If you haven't watched it yet, look away until you have because there will probably be spoilers. You have been warned.

Season 2 Cast

Obviously, all the cast (who didn't die in season one) returned for season two. Neil Patrick Harris continued to be a horribly evil Count Olaf. He does such a good job with the role. Then there are the three children, who do look a bit older, especially Klaus and Sunny. Sunny can walk now. She's the cutest. And Klaus is taller than Violet and his voice is changing. Their dynamic together still continues to be great.

Lemony Snicket is still one of my favorite characters. I would love for them to make All the Wrong Questions into a show too. Anyone else? Mr. Poe wouldn't go away and I wanted to strangle him with his neck-scarf. Of Count Olaf's troupe, my favorite is still the Hook-Handed Man.

As for new cast, there was Jacques Snicket, Esme Squalor, and Olivia, played by Nathan Fillion, Lucy Punch, and Sara Rue, respectively. Each of them did superb in their role. (And two of them died, but we don't talk about that. It's too sad.) Esme is almost worst than Olaf, because she actually has brains. We were also introduced to the Quagmire triplets and I wish they and the Baudelaires could have spent more time together.

Plot

As in the first season, Count Olaf starts out by continuing to trick his way into getting the Baudelaires' fortune. However, as the season goes on, he moves away from that and towards getting revenge on the children who have foiled him so many times. He gains a new associate in Esme, and she has her own agenda, looking for the sugar bowl. (It's complicated. Watch the show if you want to know more.)

Season two is also a lot darker than season one. More deaths of people we love and separations of others. The Vile Village episode was almost depressing and the last episode ends on a terrible cliff-hanger ;). But at least this season doesn't have a crushing reveal like the last one did (although the next one will, I bet).

They've done a great job combining all the different elements of these stories. The mystery, trying to keep away from Count Olaf, learning more about VFD. We even almost get to see their parents in one flashback episode. They've taken the simple children's stories and expanded on them in an excellent way.

In short, just go watch it. You won't regret it. Okay, maybe you will, but you'll enjoy it, oddly enough.

Let's talk! Have you watched A Series of Unfortunate Events season two? Any particular favorite parts? Tell me in the comments.
