Book Review: Matilda by Roald Dahl
Matilda
by Roald Dahl
Blurb: "The Trunchbull" is no match for Matilda! Who put superglue in Dad's hat? Was it really a ghost that made Mom tear out of the house? Matilda is a genius with idiot parents- and she's having a great time driving them crazy. But at school things are different. At school there's Miss Trunchbull, two hundred menacing pounds of kid-hating headmistress. Get rid of the Trunchbull and Matilda would be a hero. But that would take a superhuman genius, wouldn't it?
Cover Review: Like most Dahl books, the cover isn't that spectacular, but the real magic is inside the pages. A good cover doesn't mean a good book and vise versa.
Plot: It's a simple plot and not the longest story, but Matilda has a lot of heart in it. It's about a little girl whose name you can probably guess and she's a genius. By two she's already reading newspapers. But most people around her (like her parents and Miss Trunchbull) are cruel to her. I was engaged from page one. It was a fun story with a touch of magic.
Characters: Matilda is our main character, and she's great. She's only five and a half and very smart, but the way she was written makes her lovable rather than annoying. Matilda was so sweet and I wanted to protect her from everyone who was mean to her.
Other characters I liked were the librarian, Miss Honey, and Lavender. Her parents and Miss Trunchbull was wonderfully despicable. Dahl does great at making nasty characters.
World: Not much to say here. It takes place in an English setting, but it feels like it could be anywhere in England. His settings aren't special, but they aren't bland either, so I'd say they're in the middle.
Other: Another great thing about Dahl books is how they encourage children to read. While the rest of her family is content to sit in front of the TV all day, Matilda is out reading books. And I really like that he does that.
Rating: 5 stars
