My Thoughts on 2017 Movies: Part 2
It's time for the second part to my annual thoughts on movies from 2017. I've finished the list of the ones I want to see and now I can write up my thoughts and recommendations. Let's dive right in.
Gifted
Original Thoughts: I honestly watched the first trailer because Chris Evans was in it. But after I watched the trailer, I thought it looked like a really sweet movie.
Thoughts After Watching: Prepare the tissues. I didn't expect it to be such a hard hitting film. It had real heart and a great story that I enjoyed. (And Chris Evans cried in it, which made me cry.)
Recommendation: A beautiful movie that anyone can enjoy, though older kids and adults will probably get more out of it. Plus there is a bit of inappropriate content. Go watch it and cry.
Thor: Ragnarok
Original Thoughts: It's a Marvel movie, it has Loki (and Thor), and of course I'm watching it. The trailers made me laugh, which is always a good sign.
Thoughts After Watching: Hilarious but with just the right amount of seriousness. I loved having more Thor and Loki and Doctor Strange's appearance. I did not like Valkerie, but the rest of the movie was awesome.
Recommendation: Perfect for Marvel and/or Thor fans. It really brings out the humorous side of Thor we all love.
Original Thoughts: I wasn't sure what to think about this movie. It looked beautiful and since it was a Pixar, I knew it would be good, but I was undecided going into it.
Thoughts After Watching: It was beautiful. Another one that made me tear up. There was great animation, songs, plot, and characters. Pixar hit all the marks on this one.
Recommendation: A family movie about family and hollowing your dreams. Which never seems to happen in movies.
Original Thoughts: Luke is back. Rey is back. Fin and Poe are back. And of course, BB-8. I couldn't wait to see it and some of the new awesome planets we'd be visiting. Also, porgs.
Thoughts After Watching: I liked it, but there were problems. Where did all these new force abilities come from? Why did Luke have to die (since he's just coming back as a ghost anyway)? I ship Rey and Fin, not Fin and Rose or Rey and Ben. Not to say it wasn't a good movie. It was, and it was brave of the director to pick this direction for it. But I was also a little disappointed.
Recommendation: Another good Star Wars movie for the collection. Very different feeling than the previous ones.
Justice League
Original Thoughts: We'll see. Batman vs Superman did not impress me, but I did like Man of Steel and Wonder Woman. So we'll see where this falls on the spectrum.
Thoughts After Watching: It had good parts and bad parts. It wasn't any worse than I expected, so that was good. There was more humor, but some of it felt kind of forced. The whole thing was just set-up for the other movies that they plan on doing. And who's even heard of the villain?
Recommendation: Watch it for Wonder Woman and Superman beating up Batman. It has some good in there, even if it's a tiny bit.
Original Thoughts: It had a lot of big name actors, but that doesn't mean that the movie will be good. Look at the Emoji Movie. I hoped it would be done well, because I liked the book.
Thoughts After Watching: It was pretty well done. They added the original story to give it more action, but I thought it didn't feel intrusive, which was good. One of the only parts I didn't like was that the little girl who was murdered looks a lot like a little girl I babysat, so it made me sad.
Recommendation: A good murder mystery movie. Probably not for younger kids, due to the murder bit.
Original Thoughts: The first movie with Robin Williams was cool, but will this one stand up to that standard? Even if it does have great actors.
Thoughts After Watching: I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It was an interesting concept, changing the game to keep up with the times, and that was clever. The whole thing was fun and enjoyable, even if there were some rude bits. Although it still fell short on character development. They tried, but it didn't work.
Recommendation: If you liked the first one, the sequel will probably be enjoyable as well. Again, not for younger kids.
The Greatest Showman
Original Thoughts: I wasn't sure what the actual story was when I saw the first trailer. But it had Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, and Zendaya in a musical, so I was willing to watch it. The more I saw, the more I wanted to see it.
Thoughts After Watching: "This is the greatest show!" Excuse me while I go belt all the songs forever. It was amazing and one of my new favorite movies. Would I have liked other characters to have more screen time? Yes. But other than that, it was perfection.
Recommendation: If you love musicals, this is a great one. Probably a new classic. I can't gush enough about it.
Wonder
Original Thoughts: I read the book first and thought it was a great story. I couldn't wait to see the movie and hoped they wouldn't ruin it.
Thoughts After Watching: It was just as good as the book. They changed a few things, but that's pretty normal. I was really impressed by the acting and it didn't hurt that Daveen Diggs was in it.
Recommendation: A story about differences and treating others kindly the whole family can enjoy.
Pitch Perfect 3
Original Thoughts: It looked pretty interesting and I liked the first two, so we'll see how number three is.
Thoughts After Watching: Not quite as good as one and two. I thought the plot was a bit all over the place. They should have either gone with the Beca storyline or Fat Amy's dad storyline, not both. But I did enjoy it. Although where did Jesse and Benji go?
Recommendation: Pretty crass, but a good girls night movie.
Kong: Skull Island
Original Thoughts: I've never watched any King Kong movies, but this one looked pretty epic. (Also, Tom Hiddleston. Are you catching a theme here on why I watch movie trailers?)
Thoughts After Watching: An exciting action movie with some plot twists I never saw coming. It could use more character development, but it had a good heart.
Recommendation: A great film for monster movie fans.
Have you seen any of these movies? What were your thoughts? Character development or exciting plot? Tell me in the comments.
