Character Breakdown: Loki from Marvel
Thor: Ragnarok came out Friday and I'm super excited. It looks great and I can't wait to watch it (even though that won't be until it comes out on DVD). In celebration of that, I'm doing a character breakdown of my first villain- Loki. He's my all time favorite Marvel villain because he's so complex, and sarcastic. Also, he's Marvel's only villain in multiple movies. (Thanos doesn't count because all he does is sit.) So, let's get to it. Mild spoilers for the first two Thors and Avengers ahead.
Personality
• Witty. Loki is known for his silver tongue. He always has some sort of witty or sarcastic comeback. He's got some of the best lines to quote.
• Stylish. Not many people could pull off the headdress he does, yet he wears it well. Throughout all the movies, he's always put together and wearing his signature colors green and gold.
• Jealous and angry. Loki's got a lot of both of these pent up in him. He's been jealous of his brother since they were both kids and Thor got all the attention. He's also full of anger at everyone due to the ways he's been mislead or he thinks he's been slighted.
• Calm. And yet, despite all that anger, he manages to remain cool and calm on the outside, most of the time. Believe me, you know when he's lost his temper. Not a lot of people could keep such a calm countenance, so that's impressive.
Virtues
• Smart. You can't outsmart Loki. (Okay, you can, but whatever.) Loki is quite clever. He always has a plan and a backup plan, and probably a backup backup plan. Most of them involving death and destruction.
• Loves his mother. There weren't a lot of virtues for Loki, seeing as he's a villain, so I included this one that I find touching. Despite everything, Loki still loves his mother, and when she dies, he is distraught. She's his only family member he still loves.
Flaws
• Insecure. Loki is the king of insecure. He constantly seeks attention and power to try and justify what he's done and what's happened to him. He has amazing daddy issues too. You only need to watch the first Thor movie to see how insecure he is inside.
• Trickster. Since Loki is the trickster god, he's always got a trick up his sleeve. Whether it's using magic or having a secret weapon, he isn't caught unaware.
Skills
• Magic skills. Loki was taught magic from his mother, and he's good at it. He can multiply himself, shapeshift, blast things, and more. I think that's one reason he loved his mother so much, because she took time to teach him something that Thor never learned.
• Smooth talker. In the first movie, Loki is referred to as having a silver tongue. I don't think there's been a truer description of him. Loki is not only witty, but he can talk himself out of almost anything. He's always ready with a compliment or quick reply.
• Good fighter. Loki is also a fighter with a very graceful style. He can use his weapons and magic as he fights, making him a formidable opponent.
What Makes Him Interesting
• His relationship with Thor. Thor and Loki are brothers, but they certainly don't act like it. Thor doesn't want to give up on Loki and Loki just wants to kill Thor. And yet, Loki still sides with his brother after all these years. I'm interested in seeing how their relationship continues to evolve in the latest Thor movie.
• His willingness to do anything. Loki will basically do anything to get what he wants. Kill family members, destroy New York City, kill innocent people, or blast buildings. Loki wants power, whether that's ruling Asgard or Earth. And he is completely ruthless in trying to gain that.
Let's talk! What do you like about Loki? Who's your favorite Marvel villain? Tell me in the comments.
I loved this post, Rachel! XD
ReplyDeleteLoki is an awesome villain. I've only seen Avengers: Assemble, so I don't know that much about him, but I really liked him in that movie. :-D He's probably my favorite Marvel villain. XD
Loki really is awesome and a great villain. Glad you liked the post!
DeleteLoki (the Marvel villain) sounds interesting (though I have seen none of the movies) and like a cool villain especially with his shape-shifting powers.
ReplyDeleteAlso Fun Fact: Loki is actually a god (really a very small giant) in Norse Mythology.

Loki is a cool villain. I also actually knew that fact, because I've had an interest in Norse mythology for a while. Thanks for sharing it.
