5 Reasons to Watch Gnomeo and Juliet

5 Reasons to Watch Gnomeo and Juliet

I'm not sure where I first heard of Gnomeo and Juliet. But I've loved it from viewing one. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a re-telling of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, but with garden gnomes and music by Elton John. I promise it's not as weird or dorky as it sounds. Here are five reasons you should watch it.

1- Excellent re-telling

This movie takes the story of two feuding families and places it in the modern day. The red garden gnomes and the blue garden gnomes are fighting for the better, more beautiful garden, much like the people who own them. (And who are called Capulet and Montague.) It's very cleverly done, keeping the bones of the Shakespeare play, but making it more silly, modern, and with a happier ending.

2- Hilarious

There are some great jokes in this one. And not just the rude humor kind that makes you roll your eyes. There isn't a lot of that, actually. There are jokes off Shakespeare and a few clever bits of wordplay. "Let's kick some grass" anyone? (It took me forever to get that one.)

3- Shakespeare references everywhere

Ah, the Shakespeare references fill this film. From the two owners I mentioned to them living in Stratford-Upon-Haven. Even the houses the two sides live in is a split house who's numbers are 2 and 2B. *raises eyebrows hopefully* It's really fun trying to find them all, and the second film (which is about Sherlock Holmes) looks to be the same.

4- Multi-layered

It may seem like a simple story. Two warring sets of garden gnomes. But the filmmakers take the story deeper than that, adding a layer of what hate can do to people. Around the middle of the story, they reveal a second story about a couple that got divorced, breaking up two flamingos that lived in their yard. It's a nice lesson about how hate can tear things apart, it never fixes them.

5- Good main characters

Gnomeo is a blue gnome, Juliet a red. But when they meet outside their gardens, not knowing the other's color, they find they aren't that different after all. I like how they show the personality of each gnome, allowing them to shine. Even if Juliet's character tends a little towards a Strong Female Character, they're still very good. Also, their romance is super adorable.

Let's talk! Have you seen this movie? Do you like it when they change the ending in a re-telling? Tell me in the comments.

  3. This movie is one of my favorite animated films! It is so funny and awesome. The reference that took me ages to get was when Benny is typing on the computer it makes a note every time he hits a key and it plays the opening to the Elton John song "Benny and the Jets"!
