Character Breakdown: James Bond from James Bond

Character Breakdown: James Bond from James Bond

My siblings and I have been working our way through James Bond movies in the last year or so. We started with most of Sean Connery and then moved on to Daniel Craig, which we've seen all of except the newest. I'd love to work on some of the others, but that's beside the point.

With the release of the newest movie, I thought now was a great time to do a character breakdown on the titular spy. He's by no means a perfect man, but he is fascinating from a character point of view. So let's take a look at why.

Personality

•Suave. James Bond is known for being smooth and the ultimate fantasy male. He can charm everyone around him while playing cards and consuming his martini without losing sight of his quarry. He's charming and utterly British.

•Loyal. He's a Queen's man. He fights for Queen and country, goes where he needs to go and does what he needs to do to get the job done. He's also quite loyal to the various women he encounters on his travels, unless they turn traitor of course.

Virtues

•Smart. James always knows what he's doing. He comes up with plans and executes them well. I always love watching his brain work as he comes up with ways to defeat his enemies.

•Good at his job. There's a reason he's licensed to kill. He always comes out victorious at the end of the movie. He's a great secret agent.

Flaws

•Arrogant. While he is good at what he does, he's always come up as cocky to me. He knows he's good and that can go to his head. The smug arrogance in some of his scenes makes me want to slap him.

•Womanizer. You can't have James Bond without a girl. It's one of the hallmarks of his movies, and my least favorite part. Pretty much every major female character on screen he flirts with, kisses, or takes to bed. Bond girls are iconic, but more on that in a minute.

Skills

•Combat. James Bond is an excellent fighter, whether hand to hand, guns, or swords even. He might not be good with every weapon, but he can give it his best shot.

•Spying. As we mentioned, he's good at what he does. He spies, infiltrates, and never breaks a sweat. I love watching him do clever spy stuff, like send secret messages or something.

What Makes Him Interesting

•His conflicts. Especially in the new Bond movies, as they question whether they need double-ohs in this world of modern technology. James Bond is old-fashioned, but that's why he works. He gets in and does the dirty work that can't always be done with a computer.

•His character. If you look at James Bond objectively, he's not that good of a person. He's not always very nice, and as we mentioned, has so many Bond girls over the course of the movies. I find it interesting that with a character like James Bond, we just chalk it up to being a man, but when someone like Black Widow goes around kissing everyone, it's frowned on. I don't think it should be accepted for anyone. Just a few thoughts.
